Even though it's a few years old, this work is still quite timely. Think of Packer as a modern-day Studs Turkel.

In the summer of 1969, 14 year old Evie Boyd is mesmerized one day as she watches a group of older teen girls stroll through a park, unconcerned with the looks they garner with their hippie garb and free-spirited ways.
A chance meeting a few days later reunites Evie with the girls' leader, the charismatic Suzanne, and Evie follows Suzanne to a commune whose leader, Russell, demands absolute obedience from his followers.
A loose retelling of the Charles Manson story, what drives this novel is the relationship which develops between Evie and Suzanne. Author Cline's description of the time period is dead-on, and the million small humiliations experienced by Evie are brilliantly detailed in this compelling read.In the summer of 1969, 14 year old Evie Boyd is mesmerized one day as she watches a group of older teen girls stroll through a park, unconcerned with the looks they garner with their hippie garb and free-spirited ways.

Wow, this is a suspense novel that had me going until literally the last line!
The set up: college student Lianna is home for the semester break, helping to take care of her twelve year old sister, Paige, while their professor father is going away for a conference.
Their mother, Annalee, has been a sleepwalker in the past, but only when the father is away.
Lianna awakes to find her mother gone, and as she and her Paige search for their missing mother, both sisters must face troubling suspicions about their father and the detective assigned to investigate the case.
Great character development, wonderful pacing.Wow, this is a suspense novel that had me going until literally the last line!

A mash-note to all things Ticky Tacky Florida, Barry visits the Weeki Wachee Mermaids and goes ahunting for the Everglade's elusive skunk ape.
He also tours Cassadaga, a village full of psychics (and has his dog's fortune told), and drags his cousin off to a gun range where they proceed to shoot all manner of machine guns.
Full of photos (probably shot on Barry's own cell phone) and rated with Mold-A-Matic machines ratings (spoiler: machine guns top all), Barry's lunatic adventures provide a welcome getaway for cold Ohio winter's day.A mash-note to all things Ticky Tacky Florida, Barry visits the Weeki Wachee Mermaids and goes ahunting for the Everglade's elusive skunk ape.

What a delightful memoir--my favorite read of the year!
Berkheimer has created a warm love letter to the grandparents who raised her during WW II.
While her mother was away in New York, working as a Rosie-the-Riveter, Berkheimer's grandparents raised her and her siblings in Beckley, W VA.
Tales of spying on rattlesnake handlers at Sunday church services, gypsies, and lots of descriptions of wonderful home-cooked meals, this was nostalgic with zero sappiness. What a delightful memoir--my favorite read of the year!
