From Library Staff

In this Korean horror comedy/drama, a giant monster rises from the Han River and kidnaps the daughter of a riverside snack bar owner. Her squabbling family race to the rescue, much to the chagrin of corrupt officials. Environmental warning and teachable moment here: an American scientist created ... Read More »

This film is an interesting blend of comedy and the horror genre. It doesn't completely stray from its foundation as a drama / "creature feature," but there are also some really funny bits. The effects are a little iffy (but the film had a pretty low budget; only $10M - which is high for Korean standards, but still), but the cinematography itself is fabulous. Good film, worth the watch.

Darkly comedic monster movie with original creature design and protagonists worth rooting for.

I checked out a copy not too long ago and found it didn't play. I went back to my library, told them about it, and was told I'd get a another copy. Well, the new copy I got ALSO didn't work. I tried both copies on two different DVD players and neither read the disc. The other DVDs I've checked out played fine. I'm not going to bother trying for a third copy.

This film was alright. Read the the book, its more enjoyable.

Poor acting and implausible plot make this a total snoozefest. Avoid at all costs.

The DVD copy I checked out is no longer reading. Either it needs cleaning or needs to be replaced.

Yes, indeed. If I were an American I'd be kinda peed-off to find out that The Host was (in part) an angry statement from Koreans about the US Military being in their country.

This film's anti-American message was partly inspired by an actual incident from way back in 2000 where a Korean mortician (working for the US Military in Seoul) was instructed to dump a large amount of formaldehyde down the drain.

The 3-star rating that I gave The Host rests solely on the strength of the fantastic mutant monster and its ferocious appetite, and for nothing else. The actors in this film were atrociously awful, one, and all.

This is a crazy movie, in a good way. The story is your typical pour something in the river and out comes a monster but they did this really well. At times this movie is a comedy, then super serious, sad and then action. The special effects for the creature are excellent. So that it doesn’t seem like you are watching some 80’s kung fu, turn off the English dubbing and watch it in subtitles, much better and more authentic. Great movie.

Is it a horror film? Well, no...because it has no atmosphere. Is it a comedy? Well, no...because it's not funny. Is it a political statement? Well, no...because there are no real, coherent views expressed. Is it a spoof? Well, no...because there's some effort to remain realistic. Well, then...it must be a new GENRE. Because it so obviously fails at being one of the OLD genres. Let's give it really good reviews, because it breaks the mold. There...that feels better.

This movie was entertaining from start to finish! There is hardly any complaint on my behalf; the creature effects were good, and you cared about the characters, no matter how comical some of them were. I guess there are all sorts of messages you can get out of this movie, but the one I got was how a rather detached family can come together in the gravest of crises. Hyun-Seo was the glue that kept the family together, and all of the characters fight valiantly to bring her home. Touching, humorous, scary, and not a single boring moment to this movie. Excellent.
