This is definitely one for fans of Bollywood with a sense of humor. This is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek satire of big budget Bollywood dramas.

OM SHANTI OM does not intend to be a great film in itself -- it intends to love all the great films that came before. This makes it something akin to Billy Wilder's 1952 film SUNSET BLVD, in that both films are consciously full of references to movies that came before. This is even more true of OM, which is a remake/kitbash of two earlier films: KARZ (1980) and MADHUMATI (1958).

But it doesn't stop there: character names are chosen with references to past actors, and the songs are revamps of those used in KARZ. At one point, seemingly everyone in Bollywood who was available is paraded down a stage during the song "Deewangi Deewangi".

Which is to say: the more you know, the more you can appreciate. None of this makes it an inherently great film, but it certainly is a fun film, and one that truly loves Bollywood for being Bollywood.

Note for parents: while a great deal of the film is family-friendly, there is a scene or two of protracted violence in the middle which are rather more than we would expect -- or allow for our kids -- in the West (much like the last five minutes of DDLJ). FFWD can get you through those, for you'll miss no essential dialog, just high drama.

FWIW, we found MADHUMATI even better as a film, where KARZ was interesting mostly to see what got used in OM (and to get that song stuck in our heads).

Benefits from knowledge of Bollywood cinema. It's both a send-up and homage to the golden age of Bollywood, and most of the humorus parts will be over your head if you've haven't watched a fair amount of Bollywood. The music is awesome, the acting is appropriately over-the-top, and while it's easily predictable, that's kind of the point. It's a great story with catchy tunes and a lot of laughs.

A very entertaining musical about love and reincarnation beautifully acted by then newcomer Deepika Padukone and veteran actor Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Kirron Kher & Shreyas Talpade in supporting roles.

You have to see Om Shanti Om at least for the fantastic songs and especially the party number under the same name where all the big time Bollywood actors and actresses make a cameo appearance and dance with SRK. Vidya Balan, Rani Mukherjee, Priyanka Chopra, Karisma Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Kajol, Lara Dutta, Juhi Chawla, Rakha, and Tabu. Even Salaman Khan and Saif Ali Khan show up. If you ever feel depressed this is the Bollywood song and dance number to cheer you up.
