This dramatic movie is a gripping story of political persecution, racial and religious prejudice, and male-female relations (on three levels). The main themes are Schlomo’s anger over his apparent abandonment by his Ethiopian mother at a refugee camp; and the failure of the other characters to appreciate and understand his longing to reunite with his mother and his homeland. This movie has it all – personal tragedy, romance, violence, and humour. Perhaps, in the end, Schlomo is guided to overcome his difficulties by two older men who substitute for his birth father who is missing from his life? The ending might have been more credible if Schlomo’s estranged mother had identified him as a doctor in the refugee camp from the unique talisman he has worn around his neck throughout the movie. This movie could animate much discussion in a high school social studies class.
