I enjoyed the perspective shifts of each character, which all begins with Lotty's "out of the ordinary" idea about renting a castle in Italy, that is a stark contrast to the dreary wet London.
This is a delightful slow movie with a lot of subtleties, and human complexities. As the book readers have said, it's hard to fit everything into a movie. I didn't want the movie to end.

*Not for the Hollywood movie fans.

Excellent acting and engaging story line. A definite chick flick although the boys seemed to enjoy it as well. It didn't get two golden globe awards for nothing!

Could not get into story line. Was good to see Joan Plowright and Jim Broadbent. Too many dark scenes, poor lighting. Some nice flower gardens.

This movie is full of surprises and I loved the story.

I have loved this movie since I saw it in the theater at about 22. It's not for everyone - being a period piece and not full of 'action' - in the book the action is the changes to the characters. It's lyrical and subtle and about taking a chance and opening oneself to change, hope and love. About transformations and finding understanding and friendships in unlikely places. I've seen it about 6 times and it never fails to make me happy.

Michael Kitchen is a standout no matter what roles he tackles, but I was delighted to find this old gem. The story is timeless and the acting 'interesting'. Joan Plowright was outstanding.

I first saw this movie many, MANY years ago (I think on TV!) and it was such a delight to come across it, quite by accident, once again. It'll make you want to drop everything and flee, immediately, to a villa by the sea...

The dumbest movie I have seen in a long time.
This is an overacted British farce.

Lovely movie. I liked it so much I bought my own copy. The book is great also.

I hope you're not in the habit of seeing dead people, however distinguished - it's not in the best of taste!
