I did not watch this movie. I don't like subtitles.

Yes this is a foreign film with subtitles but the acting and plot for the most part makes absolute language translation unnecessary. The two girls laughing heartily were a pleasure to see. There is a good message here about how religious rules are of needing to be bent for very valuable human needs and the heart. They had to commit a bold religious sin in order to be true to their sense of valuing the friendship and death of a very lonely and terminal woman. That was the right thing to do and they paid for that right among other payments. Hint - hint this is a movie about womens' rights (or the lack thereof).

This small film from Israel deals with two young girls, both from strict, religious families, trying to help an aging women from France to atone for her sin and to die in peace. During the process one girl discovered her true sexuality, toward other women. French actress Fanny Ardant played the woman from Paris, and still radiated grace and beauty at her age. An interesting film for people who enjoy having in a glimpse into the life of people from a very different culture. Subtitles.

This is a 2007 Israeli drama directed by Avi Nesher. Naomi, the brilliant and pious daughter of an orthodox rabbi, finds herself at a crossroads of life choices when her mother dies and she is expected to marry her father's prodigy. Naomi asks her father to let her study at a women's religious seminary. Devout yet lively, Naomi's life begins to take an unexpected turn as she and her new school mate, Michelle, befriend a beautiful yet mysterious older woman called Anouk. Naomi devises a series of rituals that will somehow purge Anouk of her sins. Eventually the friendship between Naomi and Michelle leads to a growing lesbian attraction. Naomi really comes to love Michell, who however chooses a man to form a normal family life. The lesbian attraction seems like a physical touch in the first place. The film doesn't seem to get into more than a physical touch. By the same token, Michelle's attraction to the man isn't fully depicted at all. At the end, therefore, I remain puzzled about what's really going on between the two girls? It really beats the hell out of me.

This is a cultural film surrounding judeaic society and it's traditions, values and laws. Lately I've been growing tired of watching movies in another language, even though the subtitles are english. This one ended up being worth enduring more than the first half, when the screenplay got quite interesting. It captured my attention to such a point that it actually drew a tear from me at the end. I would like to give this movie a higher rating, and if I could cut out the first half, I would. But in all fairness the movie DID what a movie is supposed to do by building the story and characters. And certainly I've seen other movies and read books that went on for Much longer doing the same. (e.g. The Stand by Stephen King which took about half the book). But the first half started to lose me. I was very tempted to give this a dnf, but stuck it out and I'm glad I did (this time). So, in all fairness, the first half went with the last half, thus the lower rating from me.

I thought this movie was awesome. It really makes you see the way different cultures have to live and to appreciate the freedom that we have.

This look as if it would be a great movie. Throw the hold movie speaking a different language and has subtitles I really do not like watching the subtitles.
