The same team that did 90s classics "Trainspotting" and "Shallow Grave" kinda fell on their face with this adaptation of the Alex Garland novel. It's not so much bad as uneven and a botched opportunity, given how strong the source material is. A key problem is leading man Leonardo Di Caprio, who is just not a very good actor. Co-stars Tilda Swinton, Robert Carlye, and Virginie Ledoyne fare better. The Thai setting is lovely, but the depiction of Thai characters is less so. And for someone who put together one of the best soundtracks of the decade ("Trainspotting"), Danny Boyle's embrace of mediocre dance/rave music is disappointing. How much of its time is it? Moby is on the soundtrack. I hadn't seen this in a while and hadn't noticed all the "Apocalypse Now" references, which brings the movie's shallowness to the forefront. Garland would write the screenplays for two other Boyle films, "28 Days Later" and "Sunshine," before making his own film "Ex Machina."

Liked this movie a lot. The scenery is very beautiful. I thought that Leonardo Decaprio's acting was very good.
