Both Paul Newman in Hombre (1967) and Dustin Hoffman in Little Big Man (1970) played a white man raised by native Americans. Steve McQueen had gone one better as half American Indian and half white in this 1966 epic. All three are outstanding Western films.

The ending credits give thanks to authorities who allowed filming in Inyo National Forest and adjacent Owens Valley, both are east of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Other locations include Arizona wilderness and Krotz Springs, Louisiana.

Of note, Tom Laughlin in the cult contemporary Western Billy Jack (1971) played a half-Indian and half-white ex-Green Beret Vietnam vet.

Steve McQueen (who in real life was thirty-five) plays a 20 some year-old half-breed whose white mining father and Native-American mother were tortured and killed by bandits that were looking for gold. The movie deals with the question of revenge, crime, and bigotry against Native-Americans. Look for the great Howard Da Silva, who had been previously black-listed by Senator Joe McCarthy and his right-wing friends. Da Silva, like many great Hollywood actors, were either imprisoned or forced to work outside Hollywood in the '50's because they refused to "name names."

Good quotes posted in IMDb but some memorable moments are shown and not all talk as this one between Steve McQueen as a young man and Joanna Moore as the seductive widow:

Are you a friend of Jesse Coe's?
-I'm the one that killed him.
My name is Angie. Mrs. Coe. You might call me "The Widow Coe".
-I don't know what to say.
I do. Thank you.
-Tell me about the men he rode with.
You know, you look young. But any man that could take Jesse Coe with a knife... had to be some man.
