Another outstanding Icelandic author often considered the queen of crime fiction in Iceland. Having toured parts of Snaefellsnes (west coast of Iceland) after reading this book, I too can attest to the mystical quality of the region, which is steeped in rich heritage and culture. In fact, it's al... Read More »

SECOND BOOK IN THE Thóra Gudmundsdóttir series

CMLibrary_csmith Jan 27, 2016

In this second mystery featuring Icelandic lawyer Thora, an architect is murdered and Thora is asked to investigate. Although she is attempting to uncover paranormal activity at an old farmhouse, now Thora must investigate the murder instead. While exploring the farmhouse for possible clues, Thora becomes convinced that the farmhouse is indeed haunted. Thora's love interest, Matthew, returns to help solve the murder. After a second murder, they must now try to solve the two murders and determine a possible connection. Could it be the heirs of the farmhouse, someone at the resort where Thora is staying or were the murders politically motivated? It seems everywhere they turn there is a possible suspect. Fast paced and with a good dose of Icelandic history, this is a fun and thrilling read.

The cat's meow? Not quite, but along those Hallowe'enish lines with the second of Ms. Sigurðardóttir's mysteries from iceland.

Icelandic authors seem to share the dark sensibilities of the more popular Scandinavian mystery authors. Gloom and misery and tortured family relationships abound; as do undeveloped characters and straying plotlines.

Poorly plotted, needs copy editor!

When one of her clients asks her to investigate ghosts at his resort hotel lawyer Thora Gudmunsdottir is skeptical but sends her young daughter and soon-to-be a father 16-year-old son to their father and heads out to rural Iceland. Soon a couple of bodies have turned up and also a mystery from the past. Lots of stuff to investigate, people to question, all the while Thora must take time to get enough to eat, deal with crises at home (with only spotty cell phone reception), deal with language barriers and occasionally snuggle with her German boyfriend from Last Rituals. Not a brain busting mystery but fun and a bit different from the usual.
