Brother Thomas has a talent for the law and business dealings, so he and Prioress Eleanor take a young novice on a trip to settle some priory land problems. On the way back a storm and the novice's illness cause them to ask for shelter at the house of the local land steward. This household is rife with all sorts of human frailties: religious fanaticism, marital infidelity, and a prodigal son. The result, of course, is a series of murders. In order to keep an ambitious sheriff from hanging the wrong person, Eleanor and Thomas get involved and find out who the guilty person is. It is a toss-up with so many possibilities to choose from, but Thomas and Eleanor manage to winnow out the good guys from the bad guys.
