Foster has grit. She has resilience, and so does her mom.

A sixth grade girl and her mom spontaneously leave an Elvis impersonator in Tennessee and end up in West Virginia. The girl's name is Foster, an odd name for a girl. A lot of the characters have strange names. It's as if the author was on a mission to make them that way. This book takes place during Foster's summer vacation. In WV, she works on baking and selling cupcakes to help/befriend people and one day start her own cooking show, while learning to read. I found parts of the story unrealistic, but it's a good book for a middle schooler.

I love this author and this book. I read another one of her books and loved it, too. This book has a lot of great life lessons packed into an interesting story. Great book for ages 10-14. I also like how Joan Bauer made the book interesting by twisting the plot a lot, it made it x10 times more interesting! The main character, Foster McFee, has a very interesting life because she can't read and isn't too good at school. Foster is VERY talented at baking, baking never got my interest until I read this book it really caught my attention. ;) Have fun reading this GREAT book!!! Foster has some BIG dreams, I'll tell ya that! :)

I love this novel! I picked it up one day, as I was in the library, and let me tell you, the cover drew me in right away... I mean, who can't resist a picture of deliciously looking cupcakes? The minute I opened up the book, I just couldn't put it down! I read the whole book the same day as I got it from the library.
What made this book so intriguing? Well, the fact that Joan Bauer has a strong author's voice, that you can feel all these emotions while reading the novel and the fact that the main character (Foster McFee) has amazing character traits, truly made this novel quite the hit for me! I really felt like I was with Foster, right by her side as she told her story. Her story is quite remarkable, since even though she experienced quite a lot of challenges throughout her life, she didn't let go of her dream of having her own TV cooking show one day. She kept on baking, and baking and baking, until she was known in her town for her irresistible desserts! This book is really full of inspiring morals. I feel like a really big theme in this book is ; No matter where you are, or where your life is at, set a goal or a dream for yourself, and do whatever you can to achieve it. Anything is possible if you have determination, perseverance and passion for that goal. Joan Bauer demonstrated that beautifully in this deliciously inspiring novel!

Amazing read! Absolutely love this book! It may be because I do love to bake, but mostly its because how Joan Bauer can get you so attached to the character and make you feel like you are in the story with them! Plus I love all her books. my favorites are Hope was Here, Rules of the Road, and of course Close to Famous

I'm not a big baking fan--in fact, I'm far from it. But the author makes you appreciate the role that baking plays in the life of Foster, the main character. There may be cupcakes on the cover, but this book tackles some difficult pieces of life. Magical thinking is required to suspend some disbelief about how it all works out, but it's a really fun read along the way.
