A great work. It reads more like a collection of interrelated short stories than an epic. It is not cut and dried for you, but trust me, events and characters are interrelated and the novel is worth the investment. In a scene right out of the gaming world, a dying and rotting sun (Mario world, anyone?) looms overhead, Boudinot describes the protagonist fending off wave after wave of the undead, while leveling up and gaining new weapons, all while the sun passes away attracting roving flocks of sea birds and sanctuary must be attained before the next advancement.

Love science fiction but not this book. Read a couple of hundred pages waiting for something to happen and gave up...

The characters are strange, the plot feels out of control, but I was struck by how much of a Seattle feel I got from this book. Different facets of the city felt clearly represented and I just wanted to know more: what caused the Era of Fucked Up Shit, what could the Bionet could really cause people to do, or not do. A must read!

It is the Afterlife. The end of the world is a distant, distorted memory called "the Age of F***ed Up Shit." A sentient glacier has wiped out most of North America. Medical care is supplied by open-source nanotechnology, and human nervous systems can be hacked. Abby Fogg is a film archivist with a niggling feeling that her life is not really her own. She may be right. Al Skinner is a former mercenary for the Boeing Army, who¿s been dragging his war baggage behind him for nearly a century. Woo-jin Kan is a virtuoso dishwasher with the Hotel and Restaurant Management Olympics medals to prove it. Over them all hovers a mysterious man named Dirk Bickle, who sends all these characters to a full-scale replica of Manhattan under construction in Puget Sound.
