Nate sure has a whole lot of spunk. He's got big Broadway dreams and he's not going to let anything stop him from going to New York for an open casting of Elliot in the new Broadway production of E.T. I really admire Nate's never ending optimism despite long list of things going against him. I can tell that the author Tim Federle lives and breaths theater and it brings his writing and audio recording to life.

This book is an absolute delight. Nate is a charming and hilarious narrator (seriously, I was laughing out loud on numerous occasions) and his quest is fun and exciting. It's a fun romp that is also very sweet and had me taking out the sequel as soon as I finished.

Totally adorable, and EXCELLENT on audio! Drama kids and bullied kids will find Nate very relateable...and FUNNY!

Eighth grade musical theatre hopeful devises a plan to escape to New York to audition for a Broadway adaptation of E.T.; can he do it without his family discovering what he's up to

This is a great book!

Laugh out loud funny. At first I was put off by all of Nate's loser talk, but I stuck with it and came to love Nate as the quirky, funny, sweet character he is. I'm not sure kids will get all of the humor, especially the jokes referring to life in New York and referencing Broadway, but there is plenty in this book they will enjoy and to which they can relate. Better Nate Than Ever makes me want to break out in song!

It's been a long time since I've read a children's book like this. It made me laugh out loud. On top of being very funny it is also a touching story about one young boy trying to figure out who he is. The book It's a must read!

An Unshelved Book Club title -

A laugh-out-loud head-long delight of a read that pleased this former theater kid enormously. The narrator is smart, talented, funny and a survivor of the cruel middle school behavior (if anything is immoral it's the bullying that kids have to endure). And what a great portrait of NYC.

NYPL Staff Pick
Thirteen-year-old Nate yearns for the bright lights of the theater. What he’s got is small town Pennsylvania where nobody understands his dream. But an open casting call for a Broadway musical just might be his big break . . . if he can make it to the stage on time.
