[Found @ King County Library System]
A sophisticated mystery-suspense movie giving full expression to Donnie Yen's acting talent and natural charisma. Although some may be offended by this remark, I've never been a fan of Donnie's martial arts action as much as his acting ability and thanks to the sterling writing of Aubrey Lam, we see it showcased here.
The final action scene at the movie's climax is brutally violent with interspersed footage indicating kung fu/Shaolin conditioning to withstand sword blows, while paying homage to past martial arts' movies.
Donnie Yen does a superb job as both actor and action director, with an all around great cast of supporting actors.
Again, extremely well written by Aubrey Lam [perfect period historicity] and obviously superior directing. [The interaction between Takeshi Kaneshiro and Donnie Yen is on a whole other thespian level as was the emoting of actress, Tang Wei, playing Donnie Yen's wife!]
With the superior caliber of actors Takeshi Kaneshiro, Donnie Yen and Tang Wei we are presented with a movie viewers' visual feast.

Donnie Yen is what led me to check this out. This movie does his acting capabilities very good. I also really liked the detective, his strategy and his story (+ Donnie's humility is a thing of beauty). I expected a standard martial arts story but really enjoyed the character development and the mystery of not knowing which direction the movie was going or what the character was thinking.

I found myself laughing, in awe, in suspense - I enjoyed this movie from start to finish. The fight scenes were well filmed and the plot was good. If you can only handle martial arts movies with wall-to-wall fighting then this isn't the one but if you can handle a movie with a great plot and a unique approach to marital arts movies - than This is The One! I still find myself thinking about this film.. I gotta say the detectives "condition" is really what makes this movie, I'm going to check out more of his films after seeing this.

I'm a fan of Donnie Yen and this movie does not disappoint. His character is a mild-mannered man with a fine family in a small town. One day he is forced into a fight with some bad guys, whom he defeats. A detective who is sent to investigate the crime considers it suspicious that Donnie Yen could do this and starts to build a case that he is really a wanted gangster. Although Donnie Yen is now a beloved hero in the town, the detective is unwilling to let sleeping dogs lie and his investigations spiral out of control, leading to some wonderful martial arts sequences and a suitably violent conclusion.

Another region 3 dvd, AKA as Dragon, but available in Netflix. A young righteous detective struggled to balance the law and humanity when he discovered a dangerous fugitive was living under a new identity in a rural village. Super martial art stunts and camera work to go with the story.

Starts as a detective story and turns into a martial arts film. The old Chinese village, and its actual people, are wonderful and real ! I feel there could have been a bit less 'wire work',.. but the authentic production values, strongly underplayed performances, intense action sequences, and well-paced plot development kept me absorbed and interested.

If you like historical action film from Asia then you will like this. The detective's obsession with finding out who this village bumpkin is may be the motivation but not the meat of the story. You know from the get go that this average man is not so average. What is more interesting is does it matter if the man has made a new beginning for himself and is trying to lead a good life?Seeing how the detective's views change throughout the movie is worth the watch. It is not a great film but it is good. And has good action scenes. But with Donnie Yen that is not surprising. Takeshi Kaneshiro is true to form. Warning: it does have some bloody scenes.

Starts off slow but the ending fight scenes are good.

Detective: I caught a young man who stole from his adoptive parents. But I send him home. I put humanity above the law. I never imagined that he would poison our food. Both his parents died.
He says: you can`t trust humanity. Only physiology and the law don`t lie.
Detective: You`ll never forgive me.
Wife: you still don`t understand. Not forgiving... you`d have to still care
Captain: Is the law really more important than humanity?
Detective: Captain, what has the world come to?
Captain: Whatever the world has become you have no choice but to be part of it.
