Gunnhildur is such a down to earth character. Bates fills in private lives so well, adds depth to the story and the characters.

I was in the mood for a police procedural set in the north. I've read Bates' other books and think he is a skilled storyteller who has created some good characters. I also appreciate that he doesn't focus greatly on violent details. Bad things happen, but the reader is spared some of the gore.
