From Library Staff

I adore this cyberpunk retelling of Grimm's fairy tales, beginning with a cyborg Cinderella! If you like fast paced adventure, fairy tales, and space wars (and who wouldn't?), you will LOVE this whole series. Recommended by Caitlin

Cinder is a mechanic in New Beijing and forced to live with her stepmother and stepsisters, and they all hate her because of one reason: she is a cyborg. Cinder finds that her life gets entwined with the one of Prince Kai's in a dangerous struggle between an evil queen and herself. In order to pr... Read More »

Cinder is the first in a series of books that have taken classic fairy tales (in this case Cinderella) but have re-worked them into futuristic stories. Cinder is a cyborg who lives on earth, as another race of people live on the moon and dominate the people of earth. A deadly plague ravages the people of earth and everyone is anxious for a cure. Cinder’s life becomes interwoven with the prince’s story as well as other fairy tale characters.
I liked how the author took fairy tales and added a twist. I liked how there were “islands of familiarity” where I could connect the current story to the original classic. I liked the adventure aspect and how the fairy tale characters became interconnected throughout the series. I liked the discovery of who the characters really were and their back stories and how brave the main characters were. I didn’t really have anything I didn’t like – other than the stories had to end. :(
I’d recommend it to anyone who loves the classic fairy stories, but who likes to find out the back stories. I think people who enjoy adventure stories would also enjoy it. - 5/5 stars - SAPL Teen Read It & Review Contributor

I enjoyed this book because it was so different from what I usually read. It is a science fiction dystopian book. Of course, the whole virus thing was a little too close for comfort with what is going on in the world right now.

Cinder is a courageous cyborg that is determined to get away from the evil stepmother. She finds out she has been lied to about her origins. I really liked her character.

Teens will love this book

Cinder is an engaging science fiction novel that takes a futuristic take on the traditional story of Cinderella. From cyborgs to a deadly virus outbreak, this novel is filled to the brim with suspense and an imaginative plot. The characters truly come to life and the plot twists make the novel a very fun read. Highly recommend this novel for sci-fi lovers!

In the future, after the Fourth World War, the world split into Lunars and Earthens. Lunars built colonies on the moon, while Earthens created a peace treaty among themselves. Soon after, a plague spreads across the planet.

Cinder is a cyborg, considered to be lower than people. This is why cyborgs are taken for testing in an attempt to find a cure for the Plague. Cinder is also taken in for testing and soon discovers she is Lunar.

This futuristic book is a science fiction adventure novel that will have you holding your breath as you wait to see what happens next.

I don't typically read sci-fi/ fantasy books, but this book was amazing. The story line has many twists and turns, and leaves you wanting more. The depiction of class difference in a futuristic society adds an element into the book that many other books don't always have. Not only that, the oppression and negativity she faces helps with the character development, and also thickens an already crazy plot.

A Cyborg, a moon person, and a princess, whats not to like? This book has everything, not only did I fall in love with Cinder on the first page, but the characters really come to life. Everything about this book rocks.
I'm gonna talk about Cinder. She is like the hidden princess, shes shy and different, but over time she changes. Her personality is so easy. She cares for the important things, and you can't help but love her.
Now Kai, or should I say Prince Kai. He is amazing!!! You can tell from the get go that he knows what is important, and will do anything to protect his country. As well as not caring that Cinder is a filthy mechanic, he becomes friends with her anyways.
But I can't forget about Iko. She is by far my favorite character. Shes out going not afraid to express her feelings, and lovable. I loved her from the start, and so happy for her to be a character. She really elevates the book.
Then there is Peony, her spirit always fun and cheerful. Loved her so much.
That was a great book, if you have not read this book read it!!

Cinder had caught my attention after the first page. I read it slowly because I didn't want to end. I love the characters and the plot line. The only negative part for me was the story had bits of information that didn't become clear a couple chapters later. Overall I am excited to read the next book in the series.

I got really into Renegades, so I looked into Marissa Meyer’s other books. When I found out they concerned cyborg princesses from the moon, I thought they were too weird. But then my friend told me to read them, because they were, according to her, amazing in every way. So I checked out this book, thinking it wouldn’t be very good. But actually, after a little bit of research and a pinch of reading ahead, I was enthralled. The characters are amazingly real, the world building exquisite, and the plot twists riveting. This book is so weird you just can’t help but love it! I like that Marissa Meyer found a way to mix science fiction with a classic story, making it uniquely magical. I think the main character was remarkably feminist, even for a princess. I would recommend this book to lovers of sci-fi and fantasy, though it was a bit overwhelming. One of the best parts is that it has a touch of romance, but it’s not really the main point of the story. Don’t let the whole cyborg princess from the moon thing fool you; THIS BOOK IS AWESOME!!!!!!
