Very interesting book. Osnos recounts the eight years he spent in China, about 2004 to 2012, give or take. He documents interviews with politicians. academics, artists, activists, even street peddlers and weaves a tale that is both informative and entertaining. First accepting a position in China for a US newspaper his primary personal objective was to improve his Chinese. He came away with a whole lot more.

I think this book is so well written It is an amazing book about the real China the history ,the people and the struggles just to make it in a very communist country. I am listening it on tape and it just makes you proud that you are American despite all the things this country has and is going through right now. Just the story about the Taiwansese man who swims to become a Chinese citizen is captivating in itself. I highly recommend this book if you really want to understand what China is all about.

An excellent book about contemporary China. A good understanding of the Chinese, their values and Chinese society in the 21st Century.

I thought the middle section dragged a little but overall the book gives insight into what is going on in China that I had not seen elsewhere.
