After stealing bread to feed his starving sister, Jean is imprisoned. Upon his release, he returns to a life of crime until the benevolent Bishop Myriel takes him in. The Bishop encourages Jean to become an honest man and perform good deeds. Taking the Bishop's advice to heart, Jean exemplifies kindness by taking in the young, destitute Collette.
