Charlize Theron abandons her glamorous image for this stark drama, in which she plays a mentally unstable prostitute who becomes a serial killer. Aileen Wuornos (Theron) was a woman who survived a vicious and abusive childhood to become a thick-skinned but emotionally injured adult. Homeless most of the time, Wuornos survived by working as a prostitute; later in Florida, down to her last few dollars and contemplating suicide, she stopped for a beer in a bar. There, she met Selby (Christina Ricci), a woman in her early twenties who was kicked out after her Christian parents learned of her lesbian lifestyle. Selby is immediately attracted to Aileen, who soon finds herself equally infatuated with her. Selby runs away and moves into a cheap hotel with Aileen, who initially pays the bills by hooking. However, as money runs low, Aileen finds herself unable to land a regular job. Pressure mounts between the two. One night, after a 'client' attacks her, Aileen pulls a gun and kills the man. Although the murder can be categorized as self-defense, Aileen's loathing for the men who hire her for sex becomes so excessive that she begins killing her clients regardless of how they behave towards her. Meanwhile, Selby becomes aware of her lover's instability and the bloody consequences of her actions.

Better than I expected, they took care to establish the characters (based off a real story) before the violence happens. More focused on the people than the violence too. Still awful and violent events though.

An interesting psychological drama of a lady prostitute who entangles a young gay lady in relationship. This is based on a true sad story ending. Great performance of Charlize Theron and Christina Ricci.

Now, this was one brutal (and I do mean "brutal") movie. But, with that said, it was also a curiously fascinating film, as well.

Monster is an incredibly dark and disturbing tale based on the true story of the emotionally-scarred Aileen Wuornos..... Already a prostitute at the age of 13, Wuornos, in her mid-40s, became a notorious "highway hooker" and then began murdering her "clients".

This film focuses in on a 9 month period of time between 1989-1990 when Aileen murdered a total of 7 men, shooting all of her victims at least 5 times each, both in the head and the torso. Wuornos claimed that she shot these men in self-defence because they were trying to rape her.

As most viewers have indicated, the lead actress gave a powerful performance of the prostitute-turned-killer. The film is sympathetic toward her, although I do not know for sure if the real-life culprit deserved such sympathy. A pretty good film to watch.

I saw Charlize Theron's stunning beauty only last Sunday on TV at the Oscar. I can hardly believe this Aileen is the same person. She and Christina Ricci gained so much weight for these roles and completely changed the usual images of themselves.

A dark and disturbing film, MONSTER hinges upon Charlize Theron's performance as Eileen Wuornos. Everyone is always taken away by how physically transformed Theron became for this film (the make-up, the weight gain, etc.), but she truly becomes the character, with mannerisms and reactions that fit so perfectly that you don't see the actress anymore. Damaged and distanced from reality, Eileen (called Lee) has missed an emotional connection in her life for so long ... until she meets Selby (played by Christina Ricci). It sounds like a romance, but it is far from it. I cringed endlessly and felt the impact. The film was very well crafted, and for the performances from the lead alone, I recommend MONSTER.

I saw this movie when it first came out and actually own a copy. But I wanted to rate it on NYPL because I think Charlize Theron's performance is the best performance by an actress out of all the movies that I've seen thus far. (Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose comes in a close second). She completely transformed herself to portray Aileen Wuornos and delivers a phenomenal performance!!!! I was stunned, amazed, and mesmerized by her performance and said to myself, "wow, now that's acting!" She won the Academy Award for best actress for this role and she so deserved it! I'm still amazed at how she transformed herself, to the point where she is almost unrecognizable, to "become" Aileen Wuornos. Incredible!!!! Christina Ricci also gave an amazing performance. She's not the little girl from the Addams Family anymore! The movie is a really heartbreaking story and is definitely on my list of must see movies of all time!! 5++++ stars!!!! (and I haven't given 5 stars to any other movie) Outstanding!!!!
