This book is a collection of the incredibly introspective Dear Sugar advice column that ran in Rumpus.net. The advice is never straight forward, instead advice seekers are slowly led to an answer that they probably already knew deep down inside. These answers show a different side of Cheryl Strayed. I had only known her from reading Wild before this. Here she is even more open, with heartbreaking details about her own life that inform readers of their own lives.

I read this right after reading about Liberia during the civil wars, so I'm thinking the stout-hearted get-off-the-couch attitude is all very well and good, but what do you do when your situation is such that your best efforts just get to flipped to the other side of the spider web of disadvantage you are on?

Absolutely relatable and worth the read. It'll make you revisit feelings you've forgotten about and perhaps give you a new perspective of those things you can't seem to let go of.

Strayed's strength is in the way that responds to her readers' vulnerability with radical vulnerability of her own, sharing her own darkest moments and greatest failures, gently providing perspective, and often getting to the unstated heart of readers' questions. Regardless of whether any of the readers' situations resonate with you, Strayed's stunningly wise and radically empathetic approach to life, communicated through truly beautiful writing, almost can't help but change the way you see the world.

This is a crackerjack book of heartbreaking sentiment. There will be sentences that make you gasp, maybe cry, underline and write in your library book.

This book - oh, so good. It was raw, honest, and refreshing. It's like the best friend you need to give you the brutral truth - but with so much sympathy and empathy it almost hurts. Strayed writes so, so well. I wanted to copy and hang some of the letters and quotes all over my home as a reminder of some of these bits of wisdom.

The responses that 'Dear Sugar writes are insightful, sad, uplifting, and prophetic, they will touch your heart and make you want to read them out loud to everyone. There are letters from struggling young adults just out of college, folks in unhappy marriages, people suffering from financial disaster, and over 60's looking for love. ‘Dear Sugar’ provides such beautifully crystalline and compassionate advise that you will want everyone you know, especially your friends and loved ones in need of a lift to read this book.

Pick this book up. Now. You don't have to read the whole thing. In fact, you may just want to read one advice column at a time so that you can ponder it. You may not even get through the whole book, but it doesn't matter. Even one advice column will be enough to help you deal with whatever challenges you face. The letters from Cheryl's advice seekers make you realize that many of us face hard challenges in our lives. We're in good company. Yet Cheryl channels a ancient, beautiful wisdom to help us handle our difficult situations. She's there side-by-side with those who submit their problems to her. She pours out loving yet firm advice.

This book - oh, this book! I initially had taken this book out of the library but then loved it so much I ran out to buy my own copy before I was halfway through. Lots of little gems in here, Cheryl Strayed has a way of tugging at the heartstrings.
