Wonderfully written story for young chapter book readers! Does a wonderful job of creating a community folklore, connecting history with the present, mixing in magic and examining family relationships. We listened to it on CD and both my 10 year old and I really enjoyed it!

Nightbird is a story comprised of family curses, redemption, magic, and love. It’s a quick read, perfect for families to read aloud together (esp. in the waning sun of a summer afternoon).

When I find a book that doesn't have a beginning that grabs at me, I try to skim ahead to when the story "starts". It was simple to read but I never felt the hook. I would have enjoyed it alot more if it had focused on the brother and his story exclusively. Instead there is mostly exposition from the sister who has a flat personality, trained by her mom to fade into the background. This would be best for 4 or 5th graders; has more of old fashioned style to it. Its basically the movie Holes with Shia La Beouf
