In this book by Harriet Jacobs, it starts off with Linda's peaceful childhood, when she did not know she was a slave yet. She also introduces the infamous Aunt Martha ,Linda's courageous grandmother. After the death of her mother, Linda and her younger brother start to realize what they actually are and how the rest of their life is expected to go according to Mr.Flint (Linda's master). After Linda turns 15, Mr.Flint continuously tries to get Linda to do sexual activities with her and she refuses each time. This causes tension between Mrs.Flint and Linda. Jacobs describes the cruel treatment Linda and other slaves went through by sharing stories Linda heard about or saw. After having her kids, Mr. Flint becomes very angry and jealous and he starts abusing Linda and her two kids. He also promises her that they will be his slaves as soon as they reach the right age. This gets Linda furious and she decides to come up with a plan to run away to Canada. She wants her kids to have a better future and live their life without having to do labor because of their skin color.

Excellent portrayal of real life story of a female slave who survived the loss of her family,
and everything except her dignity here in the US to escape to Canada for her freedom. She really opens up the worst of slavery for women who had not one single right, voice of support or a penny to her name.
