It resembles the WW2 Japanese battleship Yamato--because that's what it is. Star Blazers came out when I was in junior high and it blew my mind. I can't WAIT to see this movie, ya'll. Thanks for hooking a brother up, spl! :)

Those of a certain age may remember watching Star Blazers in the late 70s; this is the big-budget modern reboot. This live-action remake stays largely faithful in design and tone to the original series, while also borrowing from the look of the modern Battlestar Galactica series. The story follows the same beats, though the alien Gamilons get short-shrift in favor of developing the human characters. This is an excellent, enjoyable space adventure with themes of honor, love and sacrifice.

I loved this film: a bunch of cleancut, clean living Japanese Mormon astronauts save the Earth [OK, I was kidding about the Mormon part of it, they could be Jehovak's Witnesses!] - - please ignore the fact that their spaceship resembles a submarine.
