"This is 1775. With the War of Independence playing out across the colonies, young Seth and Mercy Abbott find their new marriage tested at every turn as the demands of the frontlines and the home front collide. Rather than rehashing the tales of the most famous men of the time, Rebels details the epic story of the colonists, explorers and traders, wives and daughters, and farmers and volunteer soldiers who, in a few short, turbulent years, created the brand-new nation of America"--Page [4] of cover, volume 1.

I liked this project. The artwork really grew on me as and was filled with emotion. The gun explosions and intense moments really carried their weight. I either love Brian Wood's works (Demo, Local, DMZ, parts of the Northlanders) work or find it really boring (The Massive, Parts of Northlanders). I feel both ways about this series. I appreciate that he is telling a story that I never knew about and is personal to him. There is a great struggle in the main character between his family and duty. The connection to nature through the artwork and story are beautiful. At times the story is slow, boring and unclear. It does not have a great pace. This however is probably a reflection of what these characters were actually going through. It was not all excitement but rather plodding and struggling along. I would recommend this book for someone who is interested in learning about a different side of the revolutionary war.

I became a big fan of Brian Woods after the Tour de Force DMZ series, and the quirky Starve series as well. I was a bit disappointed here in Rebels though. The artwork was decent, but the characters were pretty flat and the storylines were unexciting. I don't really recommend it....
