Acclaimed writer Margo Rabb's Kissing in America is "a wonderful novel about friendship, love, travel, life, hope, poetry, intelligence, and the inner lives of girls," raves internationally bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love). In the two years since her father died, sixteen-year-old Eva has found comfort in reading romance novels—118 of them, to be exact—to dull the pain of her loss that's still so present. Her romantic fantasies become a reality when she meets Will, who can relate to Eva's grief. Unfortunately, after Eva falls head-over-heels for him, he picks up and moves to California with barely any warning. Not wanting to lose the only person who has been able to pull her out of sadness—and, perhaps, her first shot at real love—Eva and her best friend, Annie, concoct a plan to travel to the west coast. As they road trip across America, Eva and Annie confront the complex truth about love. In this honest and emotional journey that National Book Award Finalist Sara Zarr calls "gorgeous, funny, and joyous," readers will experience the highs of infatuation and the lows of heartache as Eva contends with love in all of its forms. the book sounded a lot better than it was... the end was really predictable and it was just plain boring at parts. wouldn't really recommend this book for others

I thought I would like this book a lot more than I did. The book was good overall, but there were parts where the ridiculousness of the characters just made me cringe. The characters’ quirkiness didn’t always fit in with the main storyline about the strained, grief-filled relationship between Eva and her mother.

If you want a coming of age, road trip novel about a girl who loves reading romances and a mother who can't stand them, a best friend who may be the Smartest Girl in America (depending on how the quiz show turns out), an aunt who is obsessed with STDs and a journey to find love/deal with grief, this this is all yours!

Road trip stories aren't my favorite YA subgenre, but I'm willing to make an exception for this one, which was pretty spectacular. Love & grief are mixed perfectly in this gorgeous book about two best friend on a cross-country bus trip from NYC to CA to compete on a game show (and see a boy!). The characters are fully realized and the joys and heartaches of Eva, the narrator, feel totally vivid and real. Highly recommended.

I loved this book. It combines friendship and first love and cultural diversity and humor and appreciation for romance novels and a hilarious road trip all in one gorgeously written package.

Here’s a breakdown of Kissing in America:

Eva’s mother is a professor, huge feminist, and over protective.
Eva is obsessed with romance novels – the smutty, embarrassing to read on the bus kind.
Her father died two years ago and she lies to everyone about how he died – she says it was a heart attack and not a plane crash.
Her best friend is Annie and she is under a lot of pressure to make her parents proud since all her two older sisters will ever amount to is sales associates at American Eagle. Eva has always had a crush on Will.
Eva starts tutoring Will and as they learn about each other and open up in ways they never have with anyone else, Eva’s love and their friendship grows.
When Will suddenly moves across the country to California, Eva is determined to find a way to see him.
When she discovers that The Smartest Girls in America is casting for a new reality game show that is shooting in California, she convinces Annie to enter and our story begins.

Eva and Annie embark on a bus trip where they’ll stay with the most bizarre family and friends along the way. They’ll learn about love, friendship, and of course, what an STD looks like when it gets in your eye thanks to Eva’s crazy aunt.

Kissing in America is going to be one of the hottest reads this summer, it really has everything you want in a summer read. I loved that Eva felt like a complete person with her undying love of romance novels and her mourning over the loss of her father. During this really short time in her life, she learns a lot about herself, her family, and her friends. She'll learn that sometimes her mother and aunt are right, and sometimes they can be wrong.

A really great summer read about an awkward road trip, chasing a boy, game shows, love, grief, and friendship.
