In Death and Judgment, a truck crashes and spills its dangerous cargo on a treacherous road in the Italian Dolomite mountains. Meanwhile, in Santa Lucia, a prominent international lawyer is found dead aboard an intercity train. Suspecting a connection between the two tragedies, Brunetti digs deep for an answer, stumbling upon a seedy Venetian bar that holds the key to a crime network that reaches far beyond the laguna. But it will take another violent death in Venice before Brunetti and his colleagues begin to understand what is really going on.

This is a fairly early entry in the Brunetti series, the fourth, originally published in 1995. But the recurring characters are all fully rounded, and the Venetian setting is, as always, beautifully described. I try to read series in order, but somehow I missed this one. Brunetti, though he's been a policeman a long time, is still feeling his way into the role, and makes mistakes. And some of those mistakes, he comes to realize, could have repercussions for his family, especially his beloved 14 year old daughter, Chiara, as well as other people. This is one of the darkest in the series, and yes, Leon's done her research. What Brunetti finds is all much too real for comfort. It's fiction, yes, but it's definitely based on fact.

This was a paperback novel without a map of Venice which the reader could use to trace the places of the events. This novel, perhaps more so than others in this detective series, focuses on the corruption of some of those in power in Venice - certain political, judicial, and police personnel and business people. I wonder if Leon makes up the corruption or if what she describes is based on fact - fact or fiction. In this story Brunetti gets involved with sexual slavery - ie prostitution. The story was a good read and enjoyable as the other of Leon's Brunetti novels.

Reminded me of Inspector Maigret - but updated. A good, easy read. I will definitely pick up more for the cottage.
