An Instant New York Times BestsellerRebus investigates a cold case that just turned red hot.As he settles into an uneasy retirement, Rebus has given up his favorite vices. There's just one habit he can't shake: he can't let go of an unsolved case. It's the only pastime he has left and up until now, it's the only one that wasn't threatening to kill him. But when Rebus starts reexamining the facts behind the long-ago murder of a glamorous woman at a luxurious hotel - on the same night a famous rock star and his entourage where also staying there - the past comes roaring back to life with a vengeance. And as soon as Rebus starts asking questions about the long forgotten crime, a fresh body materializes. His inquiries reunite him with his old pals-Siobhan Clarke and Malcolm Fox-as they attempt to uncover the financial chicanery behind the savage beating of an upstart gangster, a crime that suggests the notorious old school crime boss Big Ger Cafferty has taken to retirement as poorly as Rebus himself. As he connects the mysteries of the past to the those of the present, Rebus learns - the hard way - that he's not the only one with an insatiable curiosity about what happened in that hotel room forty years ago, and that someone will stop at nothing to ensure that the crime remains ancient history. A twisted tale of power, corruption, and bitter rivalries in the dark heart of Edinburgh, Rather Be the Devil showcases Rankin and Rebus at their unstoppable best.

This is an interim read, it connects characters from previous novels and closes some of the loops, however, the plot is weak and meandering. This is not a novel that will hold up over time but is fine for long time Rebus fans

All is not well for our beloved Rebus. He's been pensioned off the force, has adopted a dog (from the previous tale) AND quit smoking. On the bright side, he's been able to maintain his relationship w/Deb Quant! A date with the lovely Ms. Quant brings to mind memory of a cold case and he's off to the races. The latest entry in the long running series does not disappoint; Rebus, Clarke and Fox are a great team!

The 21st Rebus novel, with Rebus being retired but still found in the middle of a cold case with his former co-workers and friends Siobhan Clarke and Malcolm Fox. And in the middle of it all is Big Ger Cafferty at 'war' with one of his former disciples Darryl Christie.
There are lots of threads and interconnecting strands in the complex solving of this case. A very satisfying and enjoyable read, especially if you are a Rebus fan. Recommended.

When I started reading this book, I wondered if I was going to be interested in reading about aging gangsters in Edinburgh fighting over turf while, an aging, sick detective, trying to solve a cold case murder case, returns to work unofficially with his past buddy detectives. I guess it was the engaging conversation among the characters that had me smiling that retained my interest as I read about the methods of money laundering and financial dealings relating to empty shell companies - the cause of the gang warfare. Rebus is quite sick in this novel coughing up all sorts of bloody globs of muscus, the result of too much lifetime smoking. I wonder if he'll make it to the next novel.

Read the book beginning to end. The story was somewhat suspenseful, but the action uneven, plodding, confusing, forgettable and readily forgotten. Expected more from this author.

I am an avid Ian Rankin fan, and was so happy to have a new Rebus story! I think it is great how he has melded the 3 characters together in one story, and the addition of Cafferty was a bonus! A fun read. Loved it!

I am trying hard to read this Rebus book in the hard cover version. I may just give up and purchase the ebook because it is do easy to get the definitions for British and/or Scottish words and acronyms. And I look up every address that is mentioned as I easily mentally travel around Edinburgh and Scotland. I have physically visited some of the locations but somehow missed the sinister aspect the Rebus sees.

The characters are such a mix of good and bad, rather like normal people just a little "badder" than anyone I know. How does Rankin get us to like all the characters in some way and to chuckle inside at how life pulls at them?

As in all detective stories there is an abundance of murders, drips of blood and surprisingly mortal tools. How great that there is always something to look forward toward.

What's not to like! Vintage Rebus! Great story. Thanks Ian Rankin!
Though I found it a bit stretched that a retired police officer could get around so much but that's Rebus for you! Love conflict between Rebus and Cafferty. Hope there's a next book!

The plot is scattered, and not in a great way. But I am a Rebus fan and I will keep reading them as long as Rankin keeps cranking them out. I really wonder if he didn't try and distance himself from Rebus, and found it didn't work out very well . . . monetarily speaking?? Just saying--he seems to be a bit tired of his hero.

If you are a Rebus fan like me, you'll grab this novel and dive in it no matter what anyone says. Rankin must feel very confident with his super trio and decided to save his more thrilling plots for future use. Still enjoyable. Malcom Fox had gained grounds on Rebus, not surprising since Rebus was awarded COPD and Fox must be empowered to be ready to fill the void that could happen two novels later. The two shared more pages together than Even Dogs in the Wild and had nice chemistry.
