START-UP NATION addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel— a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources— produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the UK?With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, Senor and Singer examine the lessons of the country's adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality— all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. In a world where economies as diverse as Ireland, Singapore and Dubai have tried to re-create the "Israel effect", there are entrepreneurial lessons well worth noting. As America reboots its own economy and can-do spirit, there's never been a better time to look at this remarkable and resilient nation for some impressive, surprising clues.

Very interesting, insightful, and well-written story. A reader, regardless of how much they already know of Israel, will be amazed with all the new things they will learn about Israeli innovation and international relations. A reader will also learn much about Israeli culture as the book explores why Israel is as innovative as it currently is. This story explores economics, lifestyle, education, and military service in Israel, as well as behaviour and values of Israelis in an interesting way. Great read for anyone interested in or studying business, economics or even politics.

One of the best books I've ever read that combines a history lesson with how a smart nation can cultivate a entrepreneur spirit for benefit of all.

Great book on how a small country can develop itself.
The biggest challenge to its sustainability is its growing population of people who are not contributing to the economy and yet live within the country.

interesting read and good insight into the development of Israel, but ex-soviet Ph.D.s and US money likely helped the country's 'start-up' miracle
