Full of warmth and wit, this novel is set in London, where a group of mostly illiterate Punjabi widows gather to ostensibly learn English but instead begin to tell their stories in a way that is frowned upon by society. The women find their courage and become able to change the course of their li... Read More »

This book touches on female empowerment, friendship, family, and community; as well as heavier topics like immigration, identity, and power dynamics. There’s also a mystery, which I didn’t expect, and it just gets so thrilling that I couldn’t stop turning the pages. When it ended, I wanted to hug... Read More »

LOVED this book! It was so engaging. I found it delightful to explore how each character challenged the assumptions of the others.

Loved, loved, loved this book. Exactly as the name implies- Nikki takes a second job believing she will be teaching English to widows. However, the class turns into something of a "creative writing" class. Lovely story about family, community, loyalty, and finding yourself somewhere in between. And of course, writing erotic stories.

I really enjoyed this! It was steamier than I would have thought, but the sex scenes were brilliantly written. The story itself was also not what I was expecting with a little murder mystery thrown in. This was an exciting read all the way around and I often had difficulty putting it down.

My only major con for this was the lack of scene breaks in each chapter. I was reading the ebook, and maybe the print copy didn't have this problem, I don't know. It was just odd to be immersed in one scene and then thrust into another without warning.

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows is a romantic comedy like Pride and Prejudice. From the beginning of the book it is concerned with finding, in the correct manner, a spouse. There are serious obstacles in the path of the heroine and the intended. And of course there examples of many other marriages, more than Jane Austen gives us. But this book is more. It is a death mystery and a thriller. Yes there is sex and violence. No it is not like Fannie Hill. The names of the widows are hard to remember. Each is introduced and each is different. I recommend the audio book. The narrator has a distinct voice for each character.

A modern Sikh woman in London teaches a class in writing and story-telling. The book is about many things - arranged marriage, being an immigrant, identity, honour killing, women's friendships - but it is also a love story and mystery. It was more layered than I had expected.

I stumbled onto this novel from the blog post on what GR employees would be reading for the Summer & what a delightful surprise! Of course, the titillating title caught my mischievous eye immediately; however, Balli delivers a story which is sublime and engrossing. I laughed uproariously for much of the book, while at other moments I desired to punch a hole through the patriarchal nonsense. And although I was savouring every page, I also wanted to swallow it whole because it was just so delicious! I learned a bit more about Sikh Culture and most importantly for me, I encountered Womyn reclaiming their Wisdom, Inalienable Rights, Playfulness, Creativity and Power. Indeed this was a succulent read for lazy, hazy days on the beach!

Nikki has always distanced herself from the traditional Sikh community, much to her parents' chagrin. When she was young, she made some radical, unconventional choices: dropping out of college, moving out, taking a job at a pub, and taking up smoking. However, after a few years of bartending, Nikki's beginning to feel directionless, and she impulsively applies for a job as a creative writing teacher in London's Punjabi community. Arriving at work, she finds women, even more conservative than her mother, who believe they are there to learn to read and write English. However, it doesn't take long before these widows become bored with the ABCs. Before Nikki knows it, her class has evolved into a workshop for erotic stories, and the widows know how to turn a swoon-worthy phrase. There's great friendship, ominous figures, and an underlining murder mystery in this fun, fast-paced story.

I listened to this audio book expecting a lighthearted romance; instead, I found a book full of depth, warmth, and life. Jaswal's work shows that simply sharing stories can help to create community, compassion, and connection.
