"I'm not a real teacher."
"That's okay, they're not real students."
Silly, but dumbly endearing 1987 movie that, if you saw at an impressionable age, you probably have some fondness for. Slacker gym teacher Mark Harmon has to give up his vacation to teach summer school to a bunch of slackers. There's the horror movie loving Chainsaw and Dave, the spacey surfer girl who falls for him (a pre-Melrose Courtney Thorne-Smith), the jock, the nerd who is bad at school, the hot foreign exchange student, the student with reading problems (Sure, she's the only student of color), and, why not, a pregnant girl and a male stripper (seriously). Harmon is equal parts irritating and charming, although his pursuit of a fellow teacher (Kirstie Alley) is a little stalker-y. But you're not watching this movie for its sophisticated politics or take on gender and race. This part of a wave of both teen movies and inspirational teacher movies in the 80s. Whoever wrote this has no idea how school works. Directed by Carl Reiner ("The Jerk," "Summer Rental"), who has a cameo at the beginning. Dumb, but fun, like a Van Halen album.

I think I watched the VHS of this in a high-school class one afternoon at the end of a school year. Most of the school had skipped classes, because the final grades were processed, so the few of us that bothered to attend, were treated to some pretty cool comedies like this for a few days during the last week.

Very good 80's high school comedy. Memorable lines and characters. Good basic storyline. Ends well. Centers more around the teacher than the students, but works well.

Can I call my folks and tell them I won't be coming home… ever?
