In the evolutionary arms race that has raged on since life began, organisms have developed an endless variety of survival strategies. From sharp claws to brute strength, camouflage to venom--all these tools and abilities share one purpose: to keep their bearer alive long enough to reproduce, helping the species avoid extinction. Every living thing on this planet has developed a time-tested arsenal of weapons and defenses. Some of these weapons and defenses, however, are decidedly more unusual than others. In Strange Survivors, biologist Oné R. Pagán takes us on a tour of the improbable, the ingenious, and the just plain bizarre ways that creatures fight for life.

Oné R. Pagán is a working biologist who really, really loves his field of study. This enthusiasm comes through in his endearing “Strange Survivors: How Organisms Attack and Defend in the Game of Life.” For a short book, “Strange Survivors” covers a great deal of ground as its author dashes from topic to topic at a breakneck pace, perhaps betraying the book’s origins in the author’s blog. Pagán’s literary talents won’t put anyone in mind of the late Stephen Jay Gould, but he surely is genial as he renews our acquaintance, however briefly, with oddball stars of the animal kingdom such as slime molds, water bears, velvet worms, naked mole rats, and all kinds of toxic and venomous creatures.
