Setsuko is a single, emotionally unfulfilled woman, seemingly stuck with a drab, meaningless life in Tokyo. At least until she's convinced by her niece, Mika to enroll in an unorthodox English class that requires her to wear a blonde wig and take on an American alter ego named "Lucy." This new identity awakens something dormant in Setsuko, and she quickly develops romantic feelings for her American instructor, John. When John suddenly disappears from class and Setsuko learns that he and her niece were secretly dating, Setsuko enlists the help of her sister, Ayako and the pair fly halfway across the world to the outskirts of Southern California in search of the runaway couple. In a brave new world of tattoo parlors and seedy motels, family ties and past lives are tested as Setsuko struggles to preserve the dream and promise of "Lucy."--Distributor website.

As the movie progressed, I started to dislike it more and more. The protagonist is bitter and unlikeable, and by the end I was disappointed, wishing that the story could have been different.

A lovely movie. From the critics' comments on the box I was braced for a feel-good formulaic piece of fluff to half-watch on a rainy friday night. Not at all. A well-told story with real, slightly offbeat characters, lots of humour and warmth but far from schmaltzy. Because it's superbly written, directed and acted, you're watching real people deal with believable events without having your face rubbed in the dark side of life. It's so rare to see a movie that tells a realistic story that calls on your emotions but does so with a light enough touch that you feel fully engaged but at the same time entertained.
As good as the movie is, the extras are embarrassing. It's interesting to hear Director Atsuko Hirayanagi talk but a competent interviewer could have got her to tell us so much more.

This is a somewhat quirky, heavy duty emotional roller coaster of a movie - - a Tokyo office lady's multigenerational sibling rivilry mixed with a longing for love against the backdrop of the normal humdrum of life.
Superior writing, directing and acting.
I enjoyed the ending - - a sweetly humanist denouement and reversal of the beginning of the movie.
[Hope this writer/director does many more movies!]

This film didn’t know what it wanted to be, comedy, drama? Got my attention initially but dribbled to a halt. At times I found it unsettling and distasteful.

I don't believe this film was complete. I think there are a few important aspects that are not fleshed out. Who is this english teacher? Why does he misbehave and treat women the way he does? Why was Lucy so taken in by him? Not quite believable.
Yet, I enjoyed watching this film for other reasons. There is a subtle humour that I enjoyed.
The rest, I can't explain.

What an excellent movie. Quirky characters and you may not entirely relate, some of that due to the nature of Japanese culture. This is a Japanese movie and it is subtitled in English. There are parts in English, but the vast majority is reading subtitles for the non-Japanese-speaker. I found the characters to be well developed. I really like that you discover the characters through the plot and interactions, not through dialogue (example: you find out one character has a family when they go to that family's house, not through dialogue with the character). Such great acting. A well written script. Explores the strong pull of the family bond, even when you are hurt by their actions and they continue to mistreat you. Ultimately a tale of an unhappy woman who has closed herself off to others who finally decides to open up, the very difficult journey this is, which ultimately helps her find connection, but not where she thought it would. It is an odd, quirky and in some ways sad tale that ultimately was a journey I LOVED being on. If you don't want subtitles, or need to relate to everyone and not feel a little out of place with the quirk of the characters, this might not be the movie for you. If you need to have explosions and car chases, this is not the movie for you. But if you enjoy a well told tale about people different from you making a mess as they decide to finally try and make an adventure of your life - this is that movie.
