As someone who is drawn to tragedy—both the literary genre and real-life terrible events—I understand the motivation behind Thomas H. Cook’s “Even Darkness Sings: From Auschwitz to Hiroshima: Finding Hope and Optimism in the Saddest Places on Earth.” In this blend of travelogue, memoir, and history lesson, Cook, a novelist best known for his superior crime fiction, visits the sites of tragic events around the globe and reflects on their meaning. War, slavery, genocide and suicide, all leave their marks on the globe and on this book. As Cook recognizes, sad places have the potential to jolt us out of our day-to-day concerns and force us to confront life more deeply and seriously, even though many visitors to tragic sites are surprisingly indifferent to what they represent, a sadly recurring theme in the book. I read this in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, and it certainly made me more thankful for the good things in my life.
