What a shock. A guy from Vancouver and a guy from Ottawa don't like the "Americanism" of the film.

Maybe if Canada had an armed forces worthy of the name instead of being protected by Uncle Sugar, they could have a reason to make movies like this, too.

Of its type, good. Its biggest flaw: it's american (glamorized war). They just love violence too much to maintain the critical distance necessary to make good art of it, just as men have trouble making good art of women (we get, uh, distracted...e.g. "well i really think i'll be more inspired if you take your clothes off."). So it's no coincidence that the best military submarine movie, by far, isn't american, (see Das Boot).
But, even by hammy jingoistic american standards, this is fairly good. It certainly beats Red October, etc.
The rescue subplot, tho necessary, is annoying, being classic rambo commando fare, wherein they trade hard-bitten laconic comments (reminds me of the time i saw an american bowling team striking poses more suited to the Alamo, just before the final assault).
Another flaw is perhaps a matter of taste. When you get a movie that has non-english speakers talking to same (e.g. russians to russians) it's just silly to have them spout english, and probably even causes confusion in those who aren't focusing closely enough.
You might say submarine movies build more *pressure* than on-surface war movies. :D Speaking of comic notes- there's an unusually blatant cliche in this film. It seems to be a rule of this genre that at some point the hero's sub will be pursued by an enemy destroyer, so the hero skipper will order silent-running. But, wouldn't you know it, some clumsy schmuck always drops a wrench! Oopsie!

Entertaining, but filled with rah rah the U.S. is the best propaganda a little too much. otherwise I enjoyed the idea of trust and working together, just without the saviour to the world complex

Does the plot have holes? Of course. Is it plausible? Not really. Is it fast paced and entertaining action? Absolutely!

Based on a book by author George Wallace. The movie was ok. The book is much more entertaining and more thorough. The movie felt like it was a summary. For example, it does not explain the motives behind the coup d'état. There is also stuff going on in New York that is essential to the story line. We can't help but ask ourselves "Why is this happening?" throughout the movie. I recommend reading the book first, then watch the movie.

I thought I saw two movies inside the two hours. The first hour is a 2 star kind of clunky Red October lite movie and the second hour is a solid 3 star on the edge of your seat straight up action thriller. That last hour has so many elements going on such as a little bit of Where the Eagles Dare,The Enemy Below,Ice Station Zebra,Run Silent,Run Deep and classic 60s Star Trek episodes(eg Balance of Terror) which mirrored the geopolitics of real life. Hunter Killer was a enjoyable but purely preposterous 1960s Cold War B movie put into a Post Cold War time frame and I appreciated the action scenes were actually understandable and not hypereditted and choppy to the point of incoherence.

The second part of the movie is very similar to a real life event during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when Russian commander Vasili Arkhipov who's judgement call inside a sub saved a majority of humanity. He overruled other commanders inside a carbon dioxide saturated,120 degree interior temp. ship being hit with signal depth charges who were screaming to launch a nuclear missile at the US Navy which would have started Armageddon. His calm and collected manner calmed the crew down and stopped the launch of the missile allowing them to surface and find out what was actually happening not what they thought was happening. Maybe someday they will make a movie about the man who saved the world.

I was sad that the content of the film was, well, bland. The timing was off. The action starts LATE in the film. It has a resolution to the problem that is, in my opinion, nonsense. Only in an idealistic world would this happen.

Quite entertaining but most parts of the movie are not realistic.

Rotten Tomatoes panned the film that "Hunter Killer cruises the murky action depths, following a perfunctory course into territory that's been charted many times before." I have seen a couple of Submarine war films before but this one has two exciting vectors, the sub and the seals. Also, the decisions made by the sub's captain, Gerard Butler, are extreme cliffhangers. Excellent production sets, big naval battle scenes and very entertaining despite of the complexity of the plot and a large number of actors. The audience will find some characters to cheer for.

***Some spoilers, for reference after viewing the film***

Well, they've just been given a two-day pass, sir. They'll be impossible to find.
-Impossible? Tell me something, XO. How many pubs are there in Faslane?
Two.
-Then let's devise a radical plan. You look in one and I'll look in the other.
===
The Russian president is simply posturing, pounding his chest.
-He's embarrassed us in Syria. He continues to defy us in Crimea. Are we going to let him to dominate us in the Baltic? And what next, Europe?
===
Joe Glass? Where the hell did you find him? What class was he?
-Never went to Annapolis, sir.

I've worked your jobs. Manned a sonar, been the Bull Nuke, I've cleaned torpedo tubes. If you think I know you better than your previous officers, you're right. I've been underwater all my life. I've missed five elections, seven Super Bowls, my sister's wedding, and my father's death. This is all I know down here. I am you.
===
I can do some of your jobs better than you. I won't. Your jobs, but they're my responsibility.
===
Beaman ain't one to hold back on his emotions. And he's got all three: irritation, anger, and rage.
===
I appreciate the gesture, Cob, but I can't take your coin. I don't think I'm gonna be buying anybody a drink on this trip.
===
If I have to say everything twice, we're not going to make it.
===
Ever seen a blast signature like this, XO?
-Until today, I hadn't seen any torpedoed submarines.
You're not seeing one here. Look at the skin of the hull...

They don't deserve a rescue.
-They were following somebody's orders, Reed.
===
Look, nobody's following the playbook. We don't know what's going on up top.
The only people who might have a clue are down there on that ocean floor.
===
Hey, boss, what's your sitrep?
-Got some heavy ordnance down there. They're loading destroyers. Pulling up to a tin can right now.

I'm your Minister of Defense, and I intend to defend our interests and our country from any threat, inside or out. Even those from a weak leader.

We let them gain a tactical advantage now, no one's ever going to remember
who threw the first punch.

Nav, stay as close as you can to the rocks without scraping the paint.

Miss Norquist, this sounds like excellent analysis for a history book, but we won't be the ones writing that book, unless we respond now!
===
Sir, that fjord is mined, it's covered in sensors and sonar fields. No matter how many precautions we take, it won't be enough to get us through undetected.
-You're right, XO. That's why we need a local navigator.
===
I am no traitor.
-No. I'm not saying you are a traitor. The traitor is the man who blew up your sub.
===
We're not enemies, we're brothers. Who else understands what it is we go through? The isolation, the fear. Riding for months inside a bomb scraping at the bottom of the ocean. But it's what we are. It's what we do.
===
All due respect, sir. You just keep leading, let us do the worrying.
===
Captain... This is absurd! The arrogance of this, for you to bring him in here! You will be court-martialed!
-Then it's my job to keep you alive long enough, so you can testify.

XO, what's better, to be right or to be alive?
===
Who are you?
- Search and Rescue. Off the grid. Three ghosts.

There aren't too many training simulations for this one.
===
Captain, I'm picking up a faint 300 MHz tonal. Heavy screw beat.
-Is it domestic?
No, sir. Sounds like an auxiliary. It's on the surface.

It'll be a minute for the blast circle to die down. If we can't hear her, sir, she can't hear us.

- Bill Beaman.
So, you're the lunatic saved the Russian President.
-And you're the crazy son of a bitch who weaved this tin can through a mine field.
Got a long debriefing.
- Yeah. One hell of a story we'll never be able to tell our grandchildren.
I would like to take one last breath before we go under. You never know what it's gonna be like when you come up.
- Could've turned ugly. Instead, it's just a beautiful afternoon. What do you say we get out of here.
Ever been on a Hunter-Killer, Beaman?
-That's the last place I want to be. Claustrophobic.
You'll be okay, as long as you don't jump out this time.
