When Tony Lip, a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley, a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on a book to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger, as well as unexpected humanity and humor, they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

Shows how living in someone else's shoes can create empathy; How even a headstrong Italian can change. If you love great music and good over bad than this will bring happy tears. Bon Natali!

I liked the fact that it is someone's life story about friendship.

This movie surpassed my expectations both on the cinematic and storyline fronts. I am sucker for movies based on real life and this is a great story of adversity, love, history and ultimately about how true and long lasting friendship can arise in the most unexpected ways. A must watch!

One of the best movies I've seen this year. Can't wait to download some of Don Shirley's music from Freegal Music Library.

This movie was a mile wide and a quarter of an inch deep.

Viggo's exagerated acting in the early scenes as chauffeur seemed to want to stir the movie toward comedy. This was a good story I but for me too many glitches. Only made it 1/3 in.

Viggo is playing Rocky Balboa as a driver to Ali's pristine maestro as they travel into the Deep South during the time it would be dangerous for a black man to do so. This film definitely has its moments but I don't think it should have won the Best Movie Oscar award. I'm beginning to wonder if there is a pattern or formula to winning that statue based on how things have gone the last two years...

Loved this! We watched it twice within 4 days (which we don't usually do) and enjoyed it even more the second time!
I loved the way it explored acceptance from many different angles, showing how other ethnic groups were victims of a type of racism as well. It also explored the arrogance of the educated versus the uneducated, as well as not painting every white southerner with the same brush.
I felt it had strong themes, was subtly crafted, and that the acting was superb!

A powerful quote, sourced from IMDB :

"Yes, I live in a castle, Tony! Alone. And rich white people pay me to play piano for them because it makes them feel cultured. But as soon as I step off that stage, I go right back to being just another nigger to them. Because that is their true culture. And I suffer that slight alone, because I'm not accepted by my own people 'cause I'm not like them, either. So, if I'm not black enough and if I'm not white enough and if I'm not man enough, then tell me, Tony, what am I? "

This quote (in IMDb) turns the direction of the film to be an inspirational comedy:

Tony Lip: You know, when you first hired me, my wife went out and bought one of your records. The one about the orphans?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orphans?

Tony Lip: Yeah. Cover had a bunch of kids sittin' around a campfire?

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus.

Tony Lip: ...Yeah.

Dr. Don Shirley: Orpheus in the Underworld. It's based on a French opera. And those weren't children on the cover, those were demons in the bowels of Hell.

Tony Lip: No shxt! They must've been naughty kids!
