Don't think I am giving anything away that the film is based on Ruth Wilson's real-life grandmother's memoir which is stranger than a well crafted fiction. To say Ruth's grandfather was “a man of mystery” is an understatement. Find out more if you are interested in this period film that brought viewers to early 1940s, 1963 and a few family photos taken around 2007. You either hate it or love it being a slow burn family drama.

This is a very slow BBC film about a young girl who is duped into marrying a man who is 30 years older than her and married with kids. He convinces her he's divorced, but she doesn't bother verifying it. He eventually dies of a heart attack 20 years later, leaving a mess behind with four sons, two wives, and a lot of misunderstandings. Supposedly he was a spy but that is never actually confirmed through anyone other than Coleman, a mysterious woman who is supposedly his boss. Anyway, it's very slow and all of my sympathies when to the first Mrs. Wilson. When the second Mrs. Wilson realizes her marriage is invalid, rather than dealing with it, she creates a forged divorce decree between the first Mrs. Wilson and her husband. That's really despicable.

Fascinating series that will leave you wondering even after the conclusion of this story. Based on the life of Alexander Wilson who dies suddenly and leaves his wife with many unanswered questions. His widow is played by Ruth Wilson, the granddaughter of the real life Allison Wilson. All the actors do an amazing job. Fiona Shaw plays Alex Wilson's handler and she plays the part beautifully!

Highly recommended, but this is the type of miniseries where you need to pay attention because it goes back and forth in time from the 1940s to the '60s. It is a crazy, crazy story, and even more so because it is based on true events. Ruth Wilson and Iain Glen give great performances.

An intriguing story! I feel for the Family! Based on true events! A good film to watch! Great acting by all, especially by Ruth Wilson, playing her own Grandmother, Alice, the heroine of this Story!

Alec had nightmares all his life, starting when he came from the First War! I want to know what exactly happened there.. , because it was only when he rewrote the facts was he able to function, during the day, it seems! Did the Family ever learned the story of that time?

Also, various people from his Foreign Service said 'he saved many lives'! Yet, it was never elaborated on! So, it is left unclear! And the Family, probably, don't know either, since his records were refused to be released by the British Government when the Family made a request! One would think that since the WW 2 happened so long ago, the info can be safely released by now!

I was a fan of Ruth Wilson before she became a star. She is fantastic in this film. There will be questions unanswered, but I don't believe the real family knows all the answers. Her grand father was an amazing liar. The scene where Allison learns that the forgiveness she gave her husband has crumbled into dust will break your heart.

Quite intriguing at first, then it got a little slow, but in all worth watching. Interesting at the end to see all the real life people connected to this story.

Fascinating story, made more so because it's based on true events. The British actors are wonderful (as always), especially Ruth Wilson, who is playing her own grandmother! The story still leaves a lot of dangling threads, but it is satisfying in its own way. Glad I saw it.
