"It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime. Delighted by a surprise invitation, Miriam Macy sails off to a luxurious private island off the coast of Mexico, with six strangers--an ex-cop, a chef, a financial advisor, a nurse, a lawyer, a young widow. Surrounded by miles of open water in the gloriously green Sea of Cortez, Miriam is shocked to discover that she and the rest of her companions have been brought to the remote island under false pretenses--and all seven strangers harbor a secret."-- Provided by publisher.

It’s hard to rate this book. I’d say it’s in the middle of the spectrum, average.
I thought the beginning was intriguing for a mystery. Why were they all summoned to an island? The middle dragged, as is often the case when you’re anxious to find out the truth. The ending wasn’t very satisfying. It seems selfish and greedy people are willing to throw just about anyone under the bus and not expect reprisal.

I'm with the cohort that just took this book at its face value- just a fun light summer read and not trying for anything in the classic genre. It was a perfect read for an afternoon- a little funny, a little scary.

This is a poor man's version of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Read the original and skip this mystery. Kristi & Abby Tabby

You know... when I discovered this book was about a "Survivor-type" contest... I should have taken it back right then. But I tried (really) to allow it to interest me; got just 3 chapters in... and returned it. To L.A. centric, too many characters that were wacked, and didn't warm to the narrator. My hero, Attica Locke, seems to have recommended it.. and it has 1/30th of the delicacy and talent that her work does... maybe the author was her cousin...???

I love mysteries with an unreliable narrator - that's exactly what Mimi Macy is. An elegant middle-aged woman with a love for beautiful, vintage things who is always trying to keep herself from thinking of disturbing things in her recent past. Hey - let's send her to a deserted island with several other diverse mysterious strangers and just see what the heck happens! Great fun ensues - for the readers, not so much for the characters in this quick read. I do wish the author would have kept up with Mimi's fun fantasy descriptions of items she saw that she would make up stories for in her head - after the first few chapters this quirk of hers seemed to disappear completely for no reason. And while the mysterious murderer wasn't necessarily difficult to figure out, the motives and the way we got there were twisty, turny, and frightening. I look forward to more books from Rachel Howzell Hall!

Terrible book, a rip off of the Agatha Christie classic "And then there were none".

This is a fun read. Seven strangers invited to a mansion on an island for the weekend. What could go wrong? Murder, of course. This is Agatha Christie on speed. Rachel Hall has created a sassy, funny, page-turning whodunit. Highly recommended.

This modern take on the classic locked-door mystery is both funny and thrilling. It is exceptionally refreshing to have a smart, funny, strong black woman narrating the story. It is extremely hard to put this book down once the action gets going!
