Opinion

From Library Staff

This documentary is about the first all-female crew to compete in the 1989-90 Whitbread Round the World Race, skippered by Tracy Edwards. Even if you know nothing about sailing (like me), this is a thrilling story about groundbreaking women.

This is a powerful and inspiring story about a powerful and inspiring crew and their brave skipper. No one on this boat was fearless... they proceeded more in the spirit of: "Feel the fear and do it anyway." It's a warts and all story about the emotional highs and the lows from the seed of the dream to its realization on the waves. It's astonishing how much great footage the director was able to bring together to really bring it all to vivid life for the viewer. To my mind it is critical viewing for girls and young women in particular, and for determined dreamers of any stripe.

An inspiring documentary about the first all-woman open sea sailing crew to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Race.

We started it and lasted 20 minuets then hit the reject button. Thought it was a dull documentary. We also were not enamored by people sailing large sale boats in bad weather. Also had the feeling it was going to be a chick flick and not one for us. When it really comes down to it we don't like the ocean it's windy and cold. We prefer the beauty of the desert. However it was a courageous victory for some ladies that worked hard to be winners.

4.5* loved this documentary! It's like sailing around the world in a race with the crew! Very powerful and invigorating story.

Excellent. These brave women had so many challenges. You wonder if they were going to make it with the refurbished boat. Raising the money was a huge task. Some special features interesting. I sailed around Cape Horn in the Navy, in 1958 on an aircraft carrier and the weather was brutal in our summer months.

WOW! An epic story well told is a good for all audiences (and I know zip about sailing/care nought for competitions ... or so I thought!) This crew of women & skipper in particular, learn a lot about themselves & teach many others a few things, too. I had forgot how blatant sexism was in the 80's. ps. Don't miss the end of the last leg.

What an inspiring story! An amazing group of women who share their experiences with such openness and emotion. Luckily for us, they had the foresight to video throughout their journey, which the filmmakers incorporated into this film.
