Army Corps engineer and astronaut Roy McBride is searching for answers in the depths of space. Twenty years ago, Roy's father went in search of proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life on Neptune during a one-way mission. The mission was designated officially as a failure. Roy searches the solar system for the truth about both his father's mission and a recent mystery that has unfolded that threatens Earth. What Roy doesn't know is that this journey will do more than test him physically and mentally. The answers he finds will challenge everything he understands about the existence of humans.

Unsatisfying in so many ways. When a movie review focuses on the incredibly emotional acting, I need to remember that means "no actual plot." At least Tom Hanks had a ball to interact with in "Castaway." Brad Pitt was left alone, pining after the dad who left for what Pitt's character desperately needs to be an heroic mission. If you like long and slow, with a lot of deep internal struggle, then you might like this. If you want more than 15 seconds of interesting action, try something else.

When I saw the trailer, I was sure I didn't want to pay theater prices to see this movie. So, I borrowed it from the library. Now I am certain I did not want to see it. Brad Pitt's character is flat, boring and nothing in the character makes me care about him. I found myself doing cleanup around the house as the movie played. Turned it off after 1/2 an hour. Not worth the time.

Perhaps someone who enjoyed this movie could give away the ending to help the rest of us understand if there really was something worth waiting for.

Boring, slow, with little character development.

I expected it to be far far better than it was.
I was bitterly disappointed.
Boring, stupid, and technically goofy.

Not bad, but not good either. Was a slightly disappointed with this movie but the story line was interesting and kept my attention throughout. Am not a Brad Pitt fan, but he was OK in this.
The chase on the moon was pretty cool though!

Glad I was willing to overlook the negative reviews here. Intelligent and very well made. Not quite as engaging as Martian or Gravity but better than average sci-fi.

Sometimes really good actors pick really bad movies. This was a bad choice for Brad Pitt.
He was excellent the script was horrible. I gave it 1 star only.

Technically advanced and sounding great, I was never bored, and Brad Pitt's acting allowed me to suspend disbelief despite my usual objection to the concept of Hollywood superstars in space.

However the lunar chase and animal research vessel scenes, while both cool and well-done, seemed from a different film when I realized that each led nowhere. As the movie progressed each left me wondering "Well what was that for?"

Breathtakingly absurd near the end was Pitt hurtling through space wielding a panel from the ship as a shield from space rocks like a favorite super-hero. Oh come on!

Perhaps those first 2 scenes were added to serve no purpose other than to meet sci fi fans expectations and to add action to what's really an outer space personal inner journey and a father/son relationship drama. Perhaps the makers felt today's audiences would reject such a film without some action sequences. And perhaps Brad Pitt soaring through space with a shield would meet the needs of superhero action fans? Trouble is, folks expecting a space action flick hated this film.

Anyway those contrived scenes jerked me out of the film, but otherwise I felt it was still an overall well-made and engaging film worth watching, just not the classic it was oh so obviously trying hard to be. I imagine the writer/director was disappointed to say the least that despite the ambition, high concept, and all the expense, it received but 1 Oscar nom - for sound editing. Ouch!

24 quotes in IMDb; quite a few for a film with few dialogue. The two below is in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors):

I am active and engaged. I'm aware of my surroundings and those in my immediate sphere. I'm attentive. I'm focused on the essential... to the exclusion of all else. I'm unsure of the future... but I'm not concerned. I will rely on those closest to me. And I will share their burdens... as they share mine. I will live... and love.

He captured strange and distant worlds in greater detail than ever before. They were beautiful, magnificent... full of awe and wonder. But beneath their sublime surfaces... there was nothing. No love or hate. No light or dark. He could only see what was not there... and missed what was right in front of him.
