It's a war movie, but not as violent as other war movies. It helps you gain perspective on what trench warfare in Europe was like during WWI. Recommended by Esther L.

Add a SummaryI didn't notice there were dead bodies I said in theatres and now on DVD I didn't notice them either. In theatres I thought he was crying because someone died but my brother said it's because he's exhausted. 7, 13 I heard at home but he said seven platoon. My brother later said that the actor who played Colonel Mackenzie was the voice of the Grinch in the 2018 film. He said that during the credits. We watched The Grinch in theatres too. I said in theatres I forgot that he had the rings when he gave it to the other man.

Add a CommentBrilliant production and amazing how it glued me to the screen with such a simple message, a road trip quest about the insanity of war and survivor regret.
The craftsmanship marks this as a director's movie with a spartan script, amazing camera work, and the most impressive expansion and compression of time and space I've ever watched. The camera eye was seamless and never skipped a beat over a full range of calm to action, perspective jumps, lighting and distance extremes, even wet versus dry. You're never left wondering what's happening or where you are; it felt like the entire story evolved inside your head because you were there. The sets oozed detail and I believe everything not handled or human was full CG, but at the time I questioned nothing. Not once did I get that gut feeling that I just watched digital pablum, but many scenes had to be full CG based on circumstance. The entire movie could have been spoiled by a single frame of James Bond surfing a slushy tidal wave with the mouse cursor in-frame, but don't hold your breath because it never happens.
I suspect a worn and dirty world appearance is hard to replicate virtually, but my awe was on a level that reminded me of seeing the original Star Wars at a theatre. I saw a couple of period and technical glitches, but they were debatable esoteric nerd stuff that didn't change the telling. The worst part about this film was my fascination, feeling more like a film club viewing than enjoying a major release, but I think any missing emotional introspection was well compensated for with an overwhelming visual experience. Please read the low ratings here carefully as they're true; you'll hate this film if your idea of a good movie is Hollywood stars, witty quips, car chases, shootouts, and the hero gets the girl.
Military guy gets sent on an odyssey of a mission to rein in a rogue Colonel. Along the way he encounters 'The Horror, The Horror' of War. Seems familiar. Oh yes, it's derivative of "Apocalypse Now" and the book "Heart of Darkness" by Josef Conrad. I must vehemently disagree with Ambroz789. This is a sorry mess of a film. Not even appearances by fine actors Colin Firth (the General) or Benedict Cumberbatch (the Colonel) could help.
The negative comments on this movie reinforce my belief that the world is filled with stupid people. It's a great movie, not boring, maybe not completely historically accurate but the story is compelling and the acting is great. God I fucking hate stupid people.
This film was intentionally shot with a gimmick outlook: To keep the viewer in the same terrain as the two principle characters in what appears to be [ except for one blackout ] ONE CONTINUOUS SHOT with amazing camerawork. Big-scale production delivers a " YOU ARE THERE " vibe like few others. Whether this is a virtue or deterent is up to you.
Great story and movie. Amazing recreation of the horrible conditions that WWI soldiers were routinely exposed to. The depiction of trench life was especially revealing. Poor bastards!
A tense movie with great cinematic shots and superb acting.
Very boring,very depressing,way to long.If this is a true story they should have presented it with more depth less trenches.
Way too long with 200 minutes. I seen the compass used once. How did the lance corporal have any idea which direction to follow with all the obstacles he had to over come. If there is any truth to the story the soldier should have earned British Medal of Honor.
The cinematograhy is very good. The story not as good, but I liked the movie.
An excellent WWI movie about a brave and responsible British solider. Beautiful cinematography. Highly recommended.
