A good movie to support to abolish death sentence.
Superb are the performances of Alfre Woodard as the warden and Aldis Hodge as Anthony Woods.

Important issue that was underserved. It did not really delve into the issue in any depth but focussed mainly on the experiences of those who have to carry out executions. The film was not well-made and I found it boring.

3* long drawn-out movie. Depressing for sure. I think this could have been much better.

No way for the producers of this film to know that Black Lives Matter would demonstrate nationally for two months straight in 2020 to plea to America to end the unequal inhumane system for African-Americans. Should we be asking for clemency for the sins of 401 years? Alfre Woodward is excellent portraying an executioner trying to believe that somebody has got to do it.

Apart from an affecting in-depth exploration of a couple's relational drift, this is an obscene film because it leaves open the question about organized murder, aka capital punishment. 'Clemency' thus singlehandedly sets back any validity gained by the mass art of movies -quite an accomplishment. Certainly no young people should view the first stomach-churning torture sequence [which of course leaves open whether or not it is that] which serves as a strategy to get the most possible immature bums in seats at the cineplex. Woodard is a fine actor who serves the society of the spectacle here on a personal ego trip - 'the role of a lifetime' in a truly horrid film, revolting in its intention.

Pay no attention to the ignorant ramblings of danroc who admits to not having seen it and was, apparently, too lazy (or unable) to read the summary. It is much more about the emotional toll on the warden and guards than about the inmate in question.
That being said, many will find it quite dreary.

Years of carrying out death row executions are taking a toll on Warden Bernadine Williams. As she prepares for another one, Williams must confront the psychological and emotional demons that her job creates.
