White Read Aloud honor artist Matthew Forsythe comes a picture book about a magical drum, an emerald forest, and the little frog who dares to make her own music. The biggest mistake Pokko's parents ever made was giving her the drum. When Pokko takes the drum deep into the forest it is so quiet, so very quiet that Pokko decides to play. And before she knows it she is joined by a band of animals —first the raccoon, then the rabbit, then the wolf—and soon the entire forest is following her. Will Pokko hear her father's voice when he calls her home? Pokko and the Drum is a story about art, persistence, and a family of frogs living in a mushroom.

This book was both beautifully illustrated and hilarious. The humor is a little dark in spots, but overall the story is uplifting and positive. Just as entertaining for adults as for your children.

I didn’t really like the first pages because it seemed a bit negative and was hard to explain to a 2 year old, but it gets better.
Cute story. Very simple and happy.

Too late, Pokko’s parents realize maybe giving her a drum wasn’t the best idea. They can’t even hear each other complaining about her drum over the sound of her drum! (Think Bert and Ernie with the banana-in-the-ear problem). When they finally get her out of the house, she starts some noise, but then her friends join in and pretty soon it’s music. I could not stop smiling the entire time I read this book. It is absolutely hilarious, and Pokko is so endearing. So clever, and if you think you know what’s coming next, guess again. My favorite new picture book in a long time.

I was lucky enough to have a local school librarian who shared this with me before I could get our "on order" copy. It's gorgeous! And such a funny, sweet story to go with the beautiful artwork. it's a story about marching to your own drumbeat... literally but it isn't preachy at all. This one feels like a potential award winner.
