Opinion

From Library Staff

Christopher Nolan always finds a way to both engage and challenge the view in his films. I loved this film for this very reason: Tenet challenges you to think. What just happened? How did this film do what it just did? Brilliant. Recommended by Paul.

I'm wouldn't say Tenet was as inspiring as Inception, but it was inspired. Without spoiling the plot, I will say that writing any story around this concept and filming it so that you don't give away the ending until the end is a highly creative challenge. Sure, the audience spends the first half of the movie trying to figure out what is going on, but you'll find that in Watchmen, The Umbrella Academy, WandaVision or any number of works these days. The second half of Tenet is a lot more interesting as the pieces fit together and, in a way, it's like watching a good magician's trick again even after you know how it's done.

Poetry does not have to be understood literally, phrase by phrase, to be successfully entertaining. It is enough, if it conveys a mood, feeling, or sense of mystery.

Tenet's effects makes it like that. For a gentler introduction to the fantasy of time travel, you might well start with the movie "Final Countdown."

There is no such thing as a real paradox, which is an incomplete understanding of a larger containing system. And no time travel paradox, because time travel backwards is not possible. E.g. per Stephen Hawking, as it would violate our fairly well-established conservation and entropy laws. However time travel as fantasy is fun.

Tenet is negatively impacted by having one writer director. There is a reason for division of labor, between those two. A writer alone can be self-indulgent, as the idea in his head is obvious to him, if not to others. And probably 10% of the dialog is unintelligible, even on repeated listenings with high quality audio equipment.

Still, all that perhaps adds no great additional harm to the mystery of the story, and to the overall impact of the effects. Unusual for me, I did not feel the temptation to fast forward at all. Cheers

I really appreciate the attempt to be original in theory and overall, but this coming from Christopher Nolan is infinitely boring and sleep inducing. The first 10 to 15 minutes of this celluloid is also deeply offensive too.An extremely epic disaster of a celluloid, period.

I am not going to lie . I did not watch this movie by choice. My partner was watching it .I gave it a quick glance when the sound was so loud that I thought neighbour was going to call the police.
My opinion ,this movie is a pathetic version of the good Memento . Early days of Nolan when even though it lacks “ characters development “ are quite entertaining and the concepts are cool . Plus high budget and good cast .
This one is guaranteed to make you deaf and leave you confused.

Overall, this movie is just OK. There is a lot of action and some clever special
effects. It starts off like a James Bond type super spy movie and progresses to
a jumble of time bending sequences like in Edge of tomorrow and Inception.
You know what and why; but not who or when. It gets confusing as action is often
rolling both forward and backward simultaneously. I also found a lot of the background
sound track too loud and irritating. Trying to set a tense mood but overdoing it.

To loud. To confusing. It didn't hold my interest. Maybe it got better or there was more clarity and less explosions later but I couldn't hang in there.

Time travel and perspective masterpiece. Fun secret agent vibe.

Any chance the library will start buying 4K UHD discs? They are usually bundled with blue rays and dvds for the same price

An entertaining action thriller but it isn't half as smart as it thinks it is. Feels more like a technical creation than a work of art.
