Wonderful book that my 3-year-old grandson enjoyed once I was able to convince him to let me read it to him. (There is something about the cover design that he does not find appealing.) It gave him good ideas for expressing his fondness for friends and family members who he either is not allowed to hug right now (during the pandemic) or they happen to be people who not like to be hugged.

This is a great story time read to teach kids that there are so many ways we can express how much we love one another in a way we feel comfortable.

Even though hedgehog and tortoise are such good friends, they've been told that they're not allowed to hug. Luckily for them, there are plenty of ways to show each other how much they care. While clearly a book making reference to Covid, the fact that it doesn't outright acknowledge it makes it something that can still be read long after the pandemic has passed, perfect for those bitter-sweet moments when a friend gets sick or is moving away.

What a sweet book! Hedgehog really wants to give Tortoise a hug to show that they are still best friends, but they can't give hugs right now! A timely book from Eoin McLaughlin to help kids (and maybe some of us grown ups!) remember we can still let our friends and family know we love them, even if we can't be close to them in person right now. The book never states why they can't hug right now, so it can be read for reasons other than COVID-19.

A Storytime Favorites staff pick. A sweet and timely story of how two friends discover what they can do when they can’t be close together. The vivid illustrations show how we can still PLAY in hard times.

Wonderful, timely and relevant book for our times for children and adults. We can all sympathize with Hedgehog and Turtle through their trials at not being able to give a love squeeze. Great talking points for the pandemic or anytime that a hug is not possible. Perfect in every way!

In this time of covid, how do we express love if we can't hug or touch? The simple and adorable drawings show us how. I recently threw a kiss to an elderly loved one in lieu of a real kiss, and he surprised me by "catching" it. That's one of the ways included in this book. Sweet and touching.

Hedgehog blew a kiss across the gap between them. Tortoise saw it, and caught it, and kept it... They could not hug. But they both knew that they were loved.
