This is very different than the old tv show. If you go into it knowing that, I think it is better. It takes a couple episodes to find it's legs but once it does it is great. I thought it was well acted. It is very dark but I highly recommend it.

Beautifully written and acted. A modern take on the early life of the famous Perry Mason. Great presentation of 1930s California. John Lithgow brilliant as always. Gritty and dark including a truth about the Elmer Gantry type ministries. Don't compare it to the television series, it stands on its own very well. Recommended.

This series seemed ok at first, and I tried to like it...but it's very dark and cold compared to the TV show I used to watch in re-runs as a kid. Also, there's lots of modern-day cursing: when I hear this in period pieces, I always wonder if it's accurate (did people really curse like that back then...?). I appreciated John Lithgow's acting in this series, but unfortunately I didn't finish watching the whole thing. I stopped after the 4th episode.

I had heard good things about this movie, so was predisposed to like it. It was, however, a disappointment. Lots of yelling and uncontrolled outbursts, endless subplots that went nowhere or added nothing to the story (do we really care about Mason’s family home?). Mason alternates between bumbling and brilliant for reasons only known to the writers. Characters are painted clearly, so viewers are never left in doubt as to who to like and who to despise. Raymond Burr doesn’t need to worry about the new kid on the block. I generally like HBO productions. This one is the exception.

What I liked best about this new version and/or the prequel to what became Perry Mason with Raymond Burr was the setting. Much of it was shot in my hometown of San Pedro, California. It is a very noir and of the moment version as Perry is asexual, Della Street is gay and Paul Drake is Black. I did not like the evangelical centered story line too much and while I like Matthew Rhys I did not think he was perfectly cast as Mason. Maybe memories of Raymond Burr, with his deep voice and composure got in the way. Anyway San Pedro homies, take a look!
