First: Gavriel Savit is such an excellent writer. His prose is rich and gorgeous. His world building deep, original, and evocative. His characters fleshy and affecting. His themes weighty and relatable. And his wit humorous. Second: the story. Two young teens separately decide to challenge Death after having encountered it in the form of a grim reaper "messenger." They enter Death's realm, the Far Country, and must negotiate all manner of demons and the army of the dead. And, if they're lucky and wise enough, they just might be able to succeed and find their way back. This is the type of book you get completely lost in.
