A lovely movie. From the critics' comments on the box I was braced for a feel-good formulaic piece of fluff to half-watch on a rainy friday night. Not at all. A well-told story with real, slightly offbeat characters, lots of humour and warmth but far from schmaltzy. Because it's superbly written, directed and acted, you're watching real people deal with believable events without having your face rubbed in the dark side of life. It's so rare to see a movie that tells a realistic story that calls on your emotions but does so with a light enough touch that you feel fully engaged but at the same time entertained. As good as the movie is, the extras are embarrassing. It's interesting to hear Director Atsuko Hirayanagi talk but a competent interviewer could have got her to tell us so much more.
