This 2nd in the series brings Commissario Brunetti his first encounter with Americans, other than the nuisance of tourists in his beloved Venice, when an unidentified body turns out to belong to a nearby US Army base. The mystery is convoluted, compounded by lack of cooperation on all sides, including his superior. Again Venice itself is a major character. I've enjoyed several later books in the series, and decided to go back to the beginning. Fun to see that Brunetti, his boss, and his family are fully formed characters from the get-go, though they all grow as the series progresses.
